The Danish Way to Live Well
By Meik Wiking
I bought this book as a gift for my mum after flicking through it at a friend’s place. Having lived in Denmark a couple of times I was familiar with “hygge”. This is a great introduction to the Danish way of life. Denmark is often listed as the happiest country in the world. Published by Penguin, this book is compiled by the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen (one reason why they’re the happiest country).
The book covers many aspects of things hygge, from lighting and candles to fashion, from cooking to interior decorating. Including delightful diagrams and warm photos, each section is concisely described with helpful tips of how to introduce more hygge aspects into your own home and life.
Intuitively I had already added little touches around 60k House (candles, throw rugs, framed postcards of Danish beer), something I wasn’t conscious of until an Airbnb guest from Denmark commented on.

It seems both appropriate and conflicting to write this article while on a train in Denmark, absorbed in my headphones listening to old music, surrounded by noisy school kids. I have just spent a relaxing few days staying with friends, observing things that contribute to “hygge”.
