This was a present from a friend who knew I had designed and built my own ‘cabin’.
The book is small, but full of fabulous examples of cabins and shacks from all around the world, including one from Tasmania! Instantly recognisable and familiar, it sits comfortably amongst the other international buildings.
One common theme throughout the projects selected is the progressive, do-it-yourself approach taken by many of the owners who are also the designers and builders. There are lots of ‘How to’ chapters throughout the book, encouraging a hands-on approach.
Small buildings within big landscapes are another thread running through the book. The selection of an often remote site, and the decision of where to locate the building, is exciting. Natural, local materials are often used, softening their presence in the natural surroundings.
